MEMBERS EVENTS

On Thursday October 10th, Sylvia Huggair led a pastel workshop where attendants were guided through the process of using pastels to create their own painting of a beagle dog.
Many members, who were not familiar with soft pastel as a medium, tried their hands at mastering the various techniques that were demonstrated.

It was a relaxed and chatty affair and a great time was had by all.

Sketchers

The SEA have an association with a local sketching group (Sketchers) which meets at the Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne, on the third Saturday of the month.

Upcoming Event...

The Stephen Cheeseman workshop in April was very well received with 17 members attending and many of us struggling with an unfamiliar medium (oil pastels) However, despite the angst everyone enjoyed the challenge and Stephen spent time assisting those who were struggling.

Our November demonstration was carried out by Scottish artist Jennifer Bisset, who demonstrated her own technique for producing oil landscapes.

Jennifer is best known for her dramatic landscapes in oil, depicting the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond to the South Downs.

Jennifer has shown in many Scottish galleries and recently in Sussex galleries from Lewes to Forest Row; Gallery North in Hailsham; The Lighthouse Gallery in Eastbourne; ArtSpring Gallery in Tonbridge and The Montague Gallery in Hove

With 28 members in attendance along with a visitor, there was much interest in Jennifer's display of paintings and her techniques including various other media.

On the 12th of July, the Society welcomed Kerry Bennett who produced a fascinating, interesting and inspiring demonstration of her technique of pen and wash to create a soft finish.
Whilst painting her favourite subject of chickens,  she used pen and water to soften the outlines and used salt to produce a soft feathery effect.
She described the technique very well allowing members to understand the finer details of creating such a picture, using the pen and water to create the tonal values of the work before using delicate washes to achieve the effect she was looking for.

Art Exhibition & Sale 2nd-3rd November 2024

The Cavendish Hotel, Eastbourne

The Society of Eastbourne Artists provide a full agenda of events throughout the year which are free to members as part of their annual subscription, unless otherwise stated.

On Thursday 13th June Elda Abramson gave a stunning demonstration to our members.
Although previously  she concentrated on tapestry she now paints
She talked about her inspiration for painting the large, colourful ink (Brusho) flower paintings that are her choice of subject recently.
She achieved an MA in art from East Caroliona University, USA.
She adopted the Zen style of thinking about her subject and studying the subject before she start drawing, which she does without looking at the paper other than to locate the bamboo pen she uses with water soluble ink. She then uses the watered down powder in a similar style to watercolour with vibrant results.
The audience was excited and inspired by the effects of the demonstration and determined to have a go themselves.

The society hosted Alejandro Martinez for our September demo. In his practice, he specialises in computer generated prints and panoramic prints and gave an interesting talk about how technology and computers have had an influence on him from a very young age, even if he was not fully aware of this, and how it has continued to impact him later on in life.

Having studied and worked in architecture for 9 years, he was well versed in creating line drawings of buildings for architects and developers which then progressed to producing landscape drawings. These drawings are then scanned and digitised, adding in colour layer after layer to eventually produce his desired effect.

He then demonstrated how he produces his line drawings and shared his use of various implements, such as pens with varying degrees of strengths, and even a feather. The audience was enthralled with the narration of his life and his practice and  fascinated by the demonstration of his line drawing with different pens - especially that feather!

Alejandro exhibits across Sussex and has a current exhibition at The Lighthouse Gallery in Eastbourne.
